It really doesn't matter whether you're a freelancer, contractor or small business owner. The fact is, you're going to be facing a lot of challenges. Moving away from the safety of full time employment is a scary prospect and successfully breaking into the world of freelancing requires a little bit more than hard work alone.

The majority of freelancers quickly learn that they need to continually refine their skills if they wish to succeed. You have to know how to sell yourself and your services to recruiters and paying clients. In order to do so successfully, you should possess the following 3 qualities

No matter how good you think you are at putting on a show, creating a false front does not win credibility. You need to build up a natural rapport with the client so that they feel confident that you can handle their projects. An honest contractor will also be interpreted as one who will exercise the necessary attention to detail when completing an important activity. .

There's no point delivering a first rate piece of work, only to let yourself down the following week or month. Careful planning will ensure that the work gets done in a timely manner and to the standards you have set yourself.

Exercising consistency in the tasks you perform shows that you are responsible, trustworthy, and someone that can be relied upon. This is especially important if the client is tendering for longer term work with the promise of a steady income stream.

It sounds simple but you'd be amazed just how many projects fail because of a simple misunderstanding. Good communication skills are vital if you want to stay on the right side of your paying clients.

Make sure you have a clear and concise understanding of exactly what it is you are delivering, and if necessary get this down on paper. By providing the client with your expectations of the timelines and deliverables, there will be no issue further down the line. And remember, if you're unsure about anything, just ask!
