ID cards are stupid, and the government's pursuit of this policy shows just how foolish they are.
Most terrorists in recent attacks actually reside or were even born in the country they target. An ID card won't exactly stop that.
It won't stop employers hiring illegal immigrants - those that ignore current ID rules won't be bothered about a card.
It won't prevent fraud, in fact I think it will assist it. At best it will reduce a bit of administration for organisations like banks. Any technology they install in the cards will very quickly be targeted and cloned by fraudsters - all security measures always are.
If the police want to know my name and address they can just ask to see my driving licence.
The cost is insane, both of the project itself and to cost to the individual to acquire a card. And as with all schemes like this, it will rise.
The only benefit I can see to an ID card is if you haven't got an ice scraper and your windscreen needs clearing.
