Default Weekly poll (14/05/09)

The poll for this week is about compliance. On the day that RACS Group tell freelancesupermarket.com that they believe they may be the first provider to be so-called "compliant across the board", we want to know if you checked the compliance of your service provider before you made a choice of umbrella company or accountancy service provider.

If you did, how did you go about it? Let everyone know below.

If you didn't, why not? Were you given a strict time limit by the agency that meant you had to make a snap choice? Did you just read marketing material from the company and take it at face value? Or did you just assume that compliance would be standard across the board?

As I think I'm making it clear elsewhere, what's the point? Will any of this make a difference if they do go to the wall?

No, you still won't get your money that you're owed.

I've always gone for compliant providers. I think it's good that the league tables differentiate n'all.

I'm sure that it's at least worth asking. Obviously, you can't go through their books with a fine tooth comb, but it's a start. Those that are happy to answer questions are likely to have the least to hide.

As a contractor you are meant to be a businessperson.

Not checking how legit/stable your service provider is is amazing unprofessional IMO. You owe a duty of care to your own business to check these things out. That includes those contractors through umbrellas who aren't really business people (despite what they think) and are just simple employees.

Funnily enough, I just put that elsewhere. I'm sure it will create a real stink.
