Default Why are petrol prices still not coming down further?

Inflation has fallen again today and the price of oil has fallen dramatically in the last 6 months from up to $140 a barrel down to as low as $35 a barrel.

Yet albeit OPEC has reduced it's production by a few million barrels a day (not much compared to how much they increased production by during the boom) petrol prices, and although petrol is down from the hights of £1.18 per litre for unleaded, petrol prices are still only what they were a year ago when Oil was $80 a barrel. Am i missing something? Or is it just that the someone who was getting very very rich when prices were high is still looking to make record breaking gains?

Blame the government. Most of it is tax.

Here you go:

http://www.petrolprices.com/fuel-tax.html

That's also a good site for knowing who locally has the cheapest fuel. It won't save you much, but every little helps.

I love that site, it’s playing them at the same game. My sister works in a petrol garage and I know for a fact that they call all the local garages around them to check what price they’re selling fuel for and if necessary increase theirs.

Funnily enough, I though business collusion like that was pretty much illegal. Didn't Virgin and BA get into trouble for that?

Yep, Virgin and BA. Thing is, nowadays we have to rely on supermarkets having a price war to drive pump prices down.

Very interesting link re petrol prices thanks TopNotch. Well if we didn't pay those levels of tax on fuel we would only suffer in another way.

I'm a casual driver as i'm lucky enough to walk to work so guess i shouldn't complain, it still burns every time i have to fill the car up tho.

Jeez, how long have you been working there to start talking like you're a permie?

How dare you! permie indeed. What can i say i've got the skills to get a contract within walking distance to my house. Also means that the passenger seat of my car doesn't look like a Mcdonalds car park like yours probably does.

Your home is your office eh? Who are you trying to convince me or the HMRC?

I think you have missed a trick Red Squirrel. You cannot claim any travel costs if you walk to work, but if you cycle you can claim 20p per mile. And what proof can you give that you actually cycled.......
