Default Cover letter

I apologise if this is a completely moronic question, but when asked to provide a cover letter with a CV and you're emailing it, is it considered 'better' to attach it or include it in the body of the email? (I warned you it could be moronic)

That's not a moronic question.
If it were me I'd attach it to show you know how to format a standard letter.
