Oh you wouldn't be in the firing line, I really don't like the angle I feel the TUC has been playing for years. They want more power for the TUC rather than a better situation for the people they represent.

Aaw, shame, I was looking forward to the argument

I think unions are just ****ed that more and more people don't need them any more. They feel the need to keep telling us how evil employers are and how they're out to screw us at every opportunity.

Fact is, enough people have cottoned on to the fact that they're union membership means **** all whilst their 'leaders' are being chauffeur driven around in a Merc.

You won't see it IN WRITING until the thing is published for enactment. Between then and now, there's a lot of work going on between DBERR and various interested parties to ensure it says what we want it to say. Don't forget the original draft had everyone in scope...

ummm, i'm starting to worry now. When are we likely to see the final published documentation? I assume now the consultation period is over everyone has had their two pennies worth...

The time allowed for responses to the consultation document has ended. The results are being reviewed (as per standard practice) and some of that review goes past a selection of interested parties. I wouldn't bet on seeing any actual legislative proposals until perhaps early next year.

Of course, it has happened in the past that the consultation has theown up irreconcilable problems and the whole process has been restarted (vide the Family Business Tax fiasco). Don't think that will happen this time, the borderline cases are comparatively small in number.

In case it had escaped your attention, the main site has more on this now:

Does anyone know if any of the different political parties have mentioned this as an election issue by any chance?

Most appear to be aware and conservatives have made some noises about it but reality (given its an EU directive) is that they could only probably tinker with regulations as opposed to fundamentals or timescales.

I wouldn't be so sure. The Agency Workers Directive will send shock waves through the industry and I'm in no doubt that most recruiters will go way overboard with their AWD compliance, particularly in the first couple of years.

It'll be similar to when the MSC legislation first came out. I remember at the time wondering why the hell I was being asked to fill out some 3 page MSC questionnaire when I was the owner / director of my own limited company!

The fact is, yes it'll be a royal pain in the @rse and I imagine things won't settle down until the first quarter of 2012. But recruiters, contractors, accountants and umbrella companies for that matter will find a way to work around the BS red tape and we'll all live happily ever after.
