Surely you needed an agent to place the contractor?

but why would there be an agent already operating if there were no contractors?

It's irrelevant, they're both chancers. it's a bit like saying what came first the chancer or the chancer?

But without a contractor (and no business requirement to utilise a short-term contract) why would you need an agent?

My point exactly!

On the other hand, you couldn't just have a load of contractors knocking around with no roles!

I'm a chancer maybe, but I know of much worse agents! (Sorry agents!)

Recruitment agents do the job for me, never had a real problem with any of them....

Us agents quite clearly created the business requirement by selling the idea of a more flexible workforce to companies

How long to you lot think Recruitment Agencies have been around for in one form or another?

The first employment agency in the United States was opened by Fred Winslow who opened Engineering Agency in 1893 in the US.

They were around long before highly skilled/highly paid contract staff, when no perm. staff were called temps.

It is todays market/technology that created the need for contract/feelance staff.

Therefore, the agents came first.
