Question Mobile phone expenses

Hi can I check if I can offset my PAYG mobile phone through my umbrella?

I've read somewhere that says I can and somewhere that says I can't, problem is I can't get a contract phone.

Thanks

I think that's a no I'm afraid. Hugo or lurch may correct me but I always thought you had to supply an itemised bill with the business calls you wish to offset specifically highlighted. You can't do this with PAYE because you don't receive an itemised bill every month.

Even if I get a separate mobile for work calls?

Mobile phone companies must keep records, anyone know if you can buy them?

You can expense a mobile through YourCo (and presumably through an umbrella, but don't quote me on that) and there's no BIK, but it has to be on a monthly contract. PAYG is not an option.

Personally I don't bother since the mobile is as much social as work and I get loads of free minutes anyway. I just charge any business calls that cost anything back to MyCo - "freephone" conference call numbers are the most usual ones.

Unfortunately I'm using mine a LOT for work. I only asked on here as even the guy I spoke to at the umbrella wasn't sure!!!!

Thanks for the advice, looks like I'm stuffed as I can't get a contract mobile.

Thanks for the vote of confidence and sorry for arriving late.

You can claim PAYG calls through your umbrella, but you do still need an itemised bill. Most companies are willing to send PAYG customers a monthly bill either in the post (usually for a fee, which you can also claim on your expenses) or by email (usually for nothing). All you need do at that point is highlight the business calls and fill in your expense form.

Give your provider a call and try to work it out, you have some leverage at the moment because they really don't want people to change companies.

Why are you so convinced that you can't get a contract mobile?

Rules for LtdCo use of company mobiles are that they have to be on monthly contracts, not PAYG. This may not be true for umbrella users, it seems, provided you get itemised bills

Lets just say I've let mobile phone companies down in the past.

I'm not proud of it...

The tax legislation for Umbrella and Limited Company is the same. There is detailed guidance on what is available to you here, but as said PAYG is not an option.

Have you tried doing a contract with a deposit so that the company has no risk ? I dont know if thats possible but it may help ?
