The FSB recently ran a survey amongst SMEs and discovered that 75% of them believe their businesses would have a better chance of growing if the UK government simplified the taxation system.

The national chairman, John Wright, is calling on the government to recognise the importance of small businesses in helping the country recover from the economic slump.

A total of 1,600 small businesses were surveyed and over half of the respondents claimed that they had problems understanding taxable allowances whilst a further 34% claimed that income tax caused them the most problems.

The Conservative party seem to have understood the concerns of businesses. Speaking at the party's Spring conference, the shadow chancellor, George Osborne confirmed a 3% cut in corporation tax if the Tories win the next election. He also said that the party would simplify tax codes by reducing the tax rate payable by small companies.

Osborne hopes that by simplifying the tax system the Tories will not only create jobs and boost enterprise but also attract multinationals to set up their international headquarters in Britain.

Meanwhile, the British Retail Consortium is asking the government not to raise taxes in their last budget before the general election. They claim a rise could cause a further recession as customers would have less money available to spend in the shops.
