Service sector well on the way to recovery

Although business confidence in the UK is now moving firmly into positive territory, the economic recovery is still weak according to the British Chamber of Commerce

Figures for the first quarter of 2010 shows economic growth but the BCC says that we still run the risk of economic setbacks.

However, not all sectors are showing the same growth. The BCC Quarterly Economic Survey shows that the services sector is well on the way to full recovery whereas manufacturing is still weak.

Although 50% of manufacturing firms have tried to recruit in the first quarter of 2010, this is down from 65% in the final quarter of 2009. 28% of manufacturers said they had problems finding skilled manual and technical labour whilst 19% had difficulties when recruiting professional and managerial staff.

53% of firms in the service sector were recruiting in the first quarter. Two thirds of them were looking for full-time staff and 43% of the survey respondents said they had encountered problems recruiting.

The BCC's director general, David Frost, said that the government must help to boost this confidence with well-thought out policies and avoid additional taxation that stifle business growth.
