IR35, umbrella companies, and HMRC compliance were just some of the items discussed when Mark Prisk MP, minister of state for business & enterprise, visited Crystal Umbrella last week.

Mr. Prisk has long been a supporter of the freelance worker in this country and his pre-election commitment to review IR35 was welcomed by contractors and freelancers across the UK.

Indeed, in an interview with the Telegraph this week, and following the emergency Budget on Tuesday, Mr. Prisk and the government have confirmed that they will shortly "release further details" with regards to the review of the IR35 rules.

Both the staff and directors of Crystal Umbrella were warmly greeted by Mr. Prisk who spent several hours discussing the difficulties faced by SMEs in what is now a very challenging economic climate.

Colin Howell, Group Director of Crystal Umbrella, agreed that the smaller, energetic and hard working companies will be the "engine room that drives our economy forward in the years to come."

Crystal Umbrella, who employ a total of 85 people across their group of companies, and a further 1,200 contractors via their umbrella company, will keep close links with Mr. Prisk and his team during the current Parliment.

Although there are still many issues facing the umbrella industry, compliant providers such as Crystal Umbrella are set to benefit from further regulation that will almost certainly weed out the 'bad eggs' in the contractor-payroll marketplace.
