In the private sector, slightly over 30% of employers use temps to avoid recruiting more permanent staff members whereas in the public sector, gaining access to specific skills is the greatest motivator.
Over half of the employers surveyed believe that organisations should recognise that a mix of permanent and freelance employees is beneficial. However, of the workers surveyed, less than a fifth believe their employers actually do see flexibility as a key to success.
44% of employers in the public sector appreciate that a flexible workforce is important to their success and this is likely to become even more evident as the government's budget spending cuts start to bite.
One of the directors at Hays said that flexibility in the workforce is going to be essential to enable businesses to grow. The public sector in particular needs to be transformed and to enable this to happen, talented professionals such as skilled contractors and interim managers will be in demand.
Logan added that the private sector is missing a golden opportunity by not utilising the skills set of the temporary market to help drive their recovery.
