Is it time to brush up on your communication skills?

One of the secrets to being a successful freelancer is the ability to communicate well with your clients.

But there's a reasonable chance that even the most articulate communicator will eventually face problems with either a current or potential client. Whilst it's impossible to completely eliminate miscommunication, freelancers can take some easy steps to minimise the chances of it happening.

One good way to do this is to take notes when a client is explaining what they require, and then repeat the instructions back to the client in your own words. That way you'll both have the opportunity to clear up any misunderstandings right at the start.

Freelancing is a global business and you're likely to come across clients whose culture is very different from your own. They may have a different way of communicating and their working practices might seem alien. Indians for example think it is disrespectful and rude to rush deadlines, and yet it is the norm in the UK. Therefore, it pays to do a bit of research into your client's culture before starting negotiations.

Getting something from the client in writing is always important, but even more so if the project is going to last for a long time. If nothing else, you'll want to know the client's expectations and how and when you're going to receive some money!

It's also important to keep in touch with your clients. Even if it's just a weekly progress report, it will reassure the client that you are getting on with the project. This is also vitally important if you have encountered any problems. Letting the client know as soon as possible will minimise the chance of you missing the project deadline.

Good communication will lead to smooth running contracts and happy clients and as every freelancer knows, happy clients will keep returning.
