New Survey - “Freelancers Work 6 Hours a Day”

In a recent survey of 2000 freelancers who worked from home, it was found their average work day lasted only 6 hours.

This doesn't surprise me at all, mainly because most people do become more productive once they are taken out of the typical work environment such as an office, and then able to work on their own.

Actually, I think 6 hours might be on the long side, and with a bit of tweaking they could easily get in 4 hour work days while still earning the same amount of money.

It really all comes down to focusing on the most important tasks, and then eliminating all of the busy work and distractions.

One way to do this is by only checking email after you've put in 2 hours of work in the morning on your most important tasks, and then spending a set amount of time to reply to the most important emails. Once that time is up, you then go back to working.

The survey also gave us some interesting information, such as the fact that many freelancers are finished for the day by 4pm, even though they often don't start until 10pm.

Compare this to your typical office worker who leaves the house at 6.30am and is at their desk by 7:30am. It's then on to a hard day filled with all kinds of distractions, before finally setting off back home at 6pm.

This is why more people than ever before are now starting to become interested in the freelance lifestyle.

However, don't believe that working from home is easy, because it often takes time to become disciplined and plan out the best structure to work from.

Not only that, but many people fail simply because they don't focus, and instead spend time watching TV while trying to do work or working on their laptop while in bed. Other distractions include browsing the internet and social media, going into the kitchen for snacks and having friends round to visit.

You might be able to get away with doing this now and again, but for a successful freelance career it's a much better idea to have a place in the house that is just for work and where you are free from distractions. Once this happens, the 6 hour workday is possible.

Everyone works in different ways of course, and if you're the kind of person that likes to stay in bed until lunch and then do most of your work at 2am, then as long as you it works for you continue doing it.

For most people though, especially those who want to spend more time with their family and focus on other activities, having structure and focus is the best way to approach your day.
